I was browsing an old forum I was a part of while pregnant with Max and the question came up of whether or not you kiss your little ones on the lips, and I thought that would be some great blogging material so here it is!

I kissed my mum and dad on the lips till I was in my late teens, I never thought anything of it, but then I just kind of stopped doing it… no particular reason. I guess now I feel like I have my own little family for those kisses if that makes sense? When it comes to Zack and Max I kiss them any chance I get - practically anywhere I get! I mean who could resist those cheeks? That slobbery mouth and baby breath? And never quite knowing if you’re going to get a kiss or someone trying to bite your nose just makes it even more fun, especially now there are TEETH involved!

So what about the other half? Well, J loves the hugs, and is happy to accept the kisses, but he really prefers the rough and tumble play with Zack compared to snuggling up together. I think that’s just dads and sons in general really though isn’t it? When it comes to Max though, he really loves the quiet cuddles with him. The look on his face when he’s with Max without realizing I’m watching - oh he is SO in love with those boys :)

Do you kiss your kids on the lips? Just the cheeks? Do you or did you kiss your parents on the mouth and do you still do it? I know, random but there you have it… that’s what’s been going round my head today, most of it while I was zoned out cleaning up the highchair for Max… you don’t want to know how dirty it was before I got started on it! *hangs head in shame* There are (of course!) some pics of him in the chair, but I’ll save them for the weekend since I can’t be bothered having to transfer the pics from the camera, to my laptop, to a flash drive, to the Mac. Yes I know… I’m a lazy sod. Deal with it!

  1. Interesting topic! I never kissed my parents on the lips…not that I remember anyway. But, I do with my own kids. Ike is getting older now so he usually goes for the cheeks…but Lylli is still all about wet, smacky kisses…lol.

  2. There is nothing better than getting a web slobbery kiss from your kids!
We were never a cuddly kind of family when I was small, but my sister is much younger than me and she has a “cuddly” relationship with my parents. So no, I don’t really hug and kiss them unless it’s a BIG occasion.
As for my boys and Lance, we have all got a very huggy and kissy relationship, and I hope it lasts a while longer.

  3. I’ve never kissed my parents on the lips. We are huge into cheek kissing here. But lately my daughter wants to plant big, wet, slobbery kisses on our lips! Not sure why.

  5. I was the same as you, kissed my parents on the lips until I was a teenager. Now it is more about hugs and kisses on the cheeks.

I kiss Amy where ever I can and when she kisses me back it is ALWAYS on the lips. Getting return kisses is pretty rare though.

  6. I think no.

The reason being that my partner’s son was taught to kiss on the lips and he tries to kiss everyone on the lips. I don’t feel comfortable kissing my stepson on the lips and avoid it. But he will just kiss ANYONE on the lips and I think thats a recipe for disaster. It spreads germs, colds, ulcers, coldsores, and can be uncomfortable if the other person doesnt want it. I always kiss on the cheek with children. It’s affectionate but not too germy.

As for my own children (awhile to go yet….) I will teach them to kiss on the cheek. I wouldn’t kiss anyone but my partner on the lips and that is because being an adult he has a better immune system, and I (usually) know where he’s been. I have seen Nathan’s son kiss the dog on the lips out the back door then kiss his aunties on the lips when they came inside the front door. It was hilarious. (His aunties on his mum’s side.) I giggled.

  7. I was searching for \’Kids Discover\’ at google and found your post named \’e Space for Me » Kissing your kids\’ in search results. Not very relevant result, but still interesting to read.

  8. I remember kissing my parents on the lips, that “smack”-type kiss and I can really feel the love they have for me and my siblings! Now that I have kids on my own, I passed on the “tradition”. Now, my daughter is 12, she prefers to be kissed on the forehead and the cheeks and my little boy wants a hug from me! they’re very lovely kids!
