powercutJ had to switch off the power in our house for a while this afternoon. It was only about two hours. Sod’s law it was the two hours that Zack and Max actually decided to sleep peacefully AT THE SAME TIME. Do you know how often that happens???? The answer is NEVER!! Two beautiful hours that I could have blogged, surfed the net and my bloggy friends, or just faffed about on the PC. But nooo, the power had to be switched off. Fair enough, I was getting sick of having to cook under a stupid bedside-lamp anyway.

So I started to think of what to do while the power was off. I’m used to finding things to do when the net is down for one reason or another, surely it can’t be that much worse when it’s power to the whole house. I mean, there’s no way I can rely on electricity and gas THAT much… surely not!

First thing I thought I’d do was laundry. Wait, NO POWER… duh, not washing machine or dryer. I folded the rest of the clean clothes and put them away, tidying the bedroom a little while I went.
The dishes needed doing but no, wait a minute… the kitchen is out-of-bounds while J was tinkering about and making “EEK” noises when things went wrong fixing the new light fitting in a very manly fashion, so no dishes can be done. Neither can the sterilising of the bottles. Oh well.

I tidied the living room, toys scattered all over the floor - no more! Right, time to hoover (Scottish for vacuuming ;) ), damn… NO POWER = NO HOOVER. I was stuck sitting in the living room itching to hoover up the remnants of Zack’s lunch - I HATE CRUMBS!!! We have a dark blue carpet… bread crumbs on carpet = ARGH!!

I thought about rearranging our bedroom properly, but heck - even I’m not THAT bored!

Hmm, boys still both sleeping, J still being manly and fixing the light… still no power. What now?? I picked up my shiny blue pen and a purty notebook (you remember my stationery obsession right?) and started making lists. Then I started making a list of my lists - time to stop!!

Luckily at this point J had finished fitting the light fixture and thank god - IT WORKED!! Power restored, and I got to switch on my PC and blog about my afternoon without power. Or I would have, if the kids hadn’t woken up precisely 3 minutes after the damn power got switched on. Mr Sod and I need to have words I think…

I think if the boys had been awake I’d have had an easier time thinking of things to do, but maybe it was good for me to have some time out from the virtual world, even if it was only 2 hours!

So what do YOU do when there’s a powercut? How do you amuse yourself and your kids (husbands included with kids btw!)?
